I was brought up in Worcester, England, where I became interested in all aspects of music at an early age. Now I live and work in Edinburgh, Scotland. I completed a BMus Honours degree at the University of Edinburgh in 2005. Whilst at University, although studying all areas of music I primarily specialised in composition, covering anything from Orchestral to the more diverse Electro-acoustic genre. Since leaving University I have set myself up as a business; Emma Lines Music, and now work from home in a small studio set up.
My influences can take on any form, and in my writing I have explored not only film, but art, poetry, people; almost anything really. I especially admire 'the surreal', and easily find inspiration from directors such as Tim Burton, M. Night Shyamalan and Michel Gondry, and artists such as Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte. It is certainly fair to say that I work best with some form of media as my inspiration, so writing in film seems obvious.
As well as composing I am a peripatetic woodwind instructor for two local authorities; City of Edinburgh Council, and Midlothian Council; working in both primary and secondary schools.
Alongside my teaching for local authorities I work privately at home and in primary schools teaching Piano, Recorder, Clarinet, Saxophone and Theory, and running local Recorder ensembles. I also work for Edinburgh Council's Youth Music Initiative (YMI) where I am in charge of all 260 Recorder Players!! Recently I was invited to write a tutor book for our recorder players at the YMI to use in their lessons. Recorder Roundabout is now being used not only for the YMI but in other schools across the city!
